The “tough questions”

Tell us about yourself. Why should I hire you? Questions become difficult when they become subjective.

The issue here is not the act of answering itself. It is the inability to mentally calculate the answer the recruiter wants to hear. I must answer truthfully because I am not given the tactical alternative of providing a pre-packaged response. In reality, an open-ended question like this represents a competitive advantage when asked. I have the space to describe myself, to demonstrate what a good employee I would be, and how I am a fit for that company. I have the opportunity to talk about why that company interests me, what impressed me, or even how collaborating with them would help me during a challenging period in my life.

I have a person in front of me to interact with; I have the recruiter’s attention. Now it is a matter of seizing the opportunity. So, what will you say at the next open-ended question? How will you choose to present yourself? It is up to you.
